Indoor residual spraying (IRS) is one technique of insecticide application used to control mosquitoes that transmit malaria.
The aim is to deposit an insecticide evenly over the internal wall surfaces of houses. Traditionally an 8002E fan nozzle is used. WHO recommended a hardened stainless steel nozzle
(HSS) as the orifice is eroded by the sharp hard particles of sand that may be in water supplies in rural areas. Modern manufacturing techniques allow a similar nozzle to be produced in ceramic so the test report above compares data from samples of HSS and ceramic nozzles operated at two pressures.
Since 2007 the WHO recommendation has been to fit a control flow valve at 1.5 bar pressure to ensure even output of the nozzle as the tank pressure on a Compression decreases from 4 bar. At the 1.5 bar pressure the volume of small droplets below 100 m is reduced from >23% at 3 bar pressure to <13%. Without the CFV the spray can be applied at over 3 bar. The CFV operated at a lower pressure reduces the inhalation hazard when sprayin indoors.
The durability of the ceramic nozzle is expected to be at least as good, if not better than a steel nozzle and the manufacturing technique allows greater uniformity of flow rate between nozzles.
